On Sunday, May 24th, Everett had a fall in his bedroom while jumping over Emily. They were to have a special "sleepover" in the room they already share (haha) but it was special because they were going to sleep in sleeping bags on the floor. His arm did not immediately swell up a bunch but by the time Mama saw it at almost midnight, Everett was in a lot of pain.
The next day was Memorial Day and instead of doing something fun with the day off, Daddy, Everett and Emily were off to see the doctor. As expected, Everett was sent to the hospital to get x-rays.
The team was banded and ready to face whatever results came their way.
But, they had to wait a few minutes for the tech to show up...
and take the x-ray which showed a buckle fracture in his ulna.
(bulge on the right side of larger bone near the wrist)
Then there was a bit more waiting...
for someone to splint his arm.
He was given a hard splint and sling to keep his arm still and protected until we could follow up with an orthopedist. We scheduled our follow up for Wednesday morning. Emily was very sad to miss out on this appointment but Mama tried to take plenty of pictures for her and Daddy (especially since Daddy had done SO well keeping Mama updated when she couldn't join the urgent care visit and x-rays).
First step, remove the splint and review x-rays.
Second, choose a color for his cast.
He chose blue!
Wait, no, green!
Scratch that, RED it is!
Then we waited for the doctor to come in and talk to us. While we waited I took a couple pictures of the swelling.
The doctor showed us what the bone did under pressure by pushing down on a thin kleenex box - the cardboard buckled, go ahead and try it yourself to see! He said that Everett will be in a cast for 4 weeks and afterwards will be as good as new. Then it was time for the nurse to come back and put on the cast!
I had planned on taking pictures but I actually had to put the camera down and assist in the wrapping. Well, not the wrapping exactly, I just held his little arm and hand still. But, I did get a picture of the finished product on a silly boy.
He had some nervous giggles when it started getting hot - but was happy that it never got too hot.
Everett really enjoyed looking at the sports "x-rays" on all of the walls...
and it should be recorded that Eliza was also there for moral support.
Once the cast was all finished drying and hardening, we took a picture with a very unlucky fellow...
and were out the door.
* We paid a little extra for the waterproof cast so we could not be SO vigilant about keeping it dry with a busy little guy. Maybe when we are a couple weeks in we will try it out in the pool. :)
